Hi, I'm new mama to 12 baby chicks. I was wondering if they need grit at such a young age. They are on chick starter right now.

As long as they are on chick starter (and nothing else) they don't need grit. It's best to hold off on special treats, extras etc because their chick feed provides the nutrients they need. Chicks are like kids, if they get extras - they tend to turn up their beaks at what is best for them.

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

Chick grit is not NECESSARY persay, but there are studies showing it improves digestion and growth, even if the chicks are fed only chick starter.
