any ideas? I have it in a box by itself (boy is it mad and loud) - doesn't seem to be ill other wise. I've seen him eat and drink.

By "baby," do you mean recently hatched, or a few days old? It's it's just hatched, it could simply a rough navel, which should dry up within a few days. I'm by NO means an expert, though.

it's less than a week old - and it is just a bit bloody - seems to be doing okay - keeping an eye on it - no blood in the poop, just around the bum.

Is it possible that it's beeing picked at by others? If there was even a tiny bit of blood OR a rough navel to start with, they could be pecking at it. If this is the case, you will need to separate it until it's healed.
