Yesterday we brought home 2, day old chicks and one of them has a black outer toe and it seems to go slightly up her leg. She doesn’t seem to be in pain and is walking on it ok. Can anyone help is to identify what the problem is and the best solution

    Thanks!

    It appears to be necrotic.
If it is it will fall off on its own.
The chick will be okay if this happens.
Where did you get the chicks?

Where are you located. Has it been cold there?

    Do you think it's frostbite?

Looks like she got injured and the toe is dying and will fall off. Keep an eye for any swelling in the healthy tissue above the toe.

@azygous @Eggcessive @casportpony @Wyorp Rock would you do anything else?

    No.
If the chick was in conditions that would cause frostbite it would be dead.
I'm thinking the toe was broken during shipment to a store if that's where you got it.

If it's a baby chick, I doubt it has been outside. It is probably an injury that compromised the blood supply.

I wonder how that could have happened to a day old chick, Not that it couldn't happen but what it was?

Welcome to BYC. As others have stated the toe was somehow injured and resultant lack of blood flow has caused it to 'die'. It will eventually fall off, and bird will do fine with the remaining toes on that foot. Such injuries can also happen if a string gets wrapped around the toe.
