Hi,
I have 5 chicks that are about 10 days - 2 weeks old. 2 of them (my Easter eggers) I noticed this afternoon had huge distended crops. This is my first time raising chicks, though I've had chickens for 4 years. I called the farmer who sold them to me who suggested I take out the wood chips and replace with sand. I did that, massaged the crops, and watched them poop (normal looking). I'm hopeful that what I saw was just full/bedtime crop and will check in the morning. They are both chirping, have bright eyes, and are otherwise acting normally. One crop was firmer than the other. I've read a few crop articles and threads here (thanks!) but
I am unsure how much is normal and how much to do since the chicks are so very young. Here are some pictures if that helps. I'd appreciate any advice!
Kari

Behavior is your best indication of a health issue in any age chicken.

A baby chick with an extended crop is not at all unusual, as their crops can hold quite a bit for their tiny size, and yes, some are simply little pigs at a trough.

A chick with a crop issue or constipation issue will be lethargic, eyes likely red rimmed and strained, wings may be held low and away from the body as it stands stationary, obviously suffering. It may be trying to squat and poop and chirping loudly as it does this. Its discomfort will be obvious.

Buy some chick grit. Make it available by sprinkling it over the ground or floor of the brooder. This will go a long way toward heading off crop and other digestive issues.

Thank you!
Crops were all normal this morning! I just didn't know what normal looked like!

(And I replaced the wood shavings with sand so they have grit)
