So far two of baby australorps have this irritated bottom going need some
Quit rubbing it
They may have prolapse vents, but they also could have been pecked by the others. Baby chicks frequently have pasty butt, and need them cleaned off. this may cause constipation or prolapse, but prolapse can occur on it's own. Keep them clean and dry, and apply some hemorrhoid cream or honey to the vents to help reduce swelling. Using a red brooder lamp may help to prevent pecking, but there is a spray called BluKote that you can use to color it blue to prevent pecking. Also Gentian Violet, which is the blue stain of BluKote may be found in the first aid aisle at WalMart and drug stores. It's also cheaper than BluKote and can be applied with a QTip. Here are some threads with pictures of how others handled this:
Thank you so much for your help we really appreciate it.
We just got these chicks thursday and we really haven't been manipulating or rubbing thier vents at all, haven't noticed any if them with pasty butt since our first batch of chicks. Today was the first day that we noticed this. This is the first time we have seen this. So planning to get a handle on it soon.
