Hi all, I have been reading for over a year since we got our first chicks last spring. Now I know if there is any help for my little chick this will be the place to find it.

About a month ago we let one of our hens sit (she would NOT give up and after a month of trying we figured her insistence should be rewarded! :) ). Anyway, 10 days ago 9 of 11 eggs hatched. 8 normal sized and one bantan easter egger chick. The first five or 6 days all was perfect - she is a good mama although seemed to step on the babies a lot.

Day 6 the little EE would just stand. Not run when mama called or eat or drink. Stayed like this Friday as well - would barely keep up with the rest and had no interest in eating or anything. Did not react but if mama and others got too far would catch up to them. Saturday it would just stand there cheeping and cheeping and cheeping loudly. Not even try to keep up with others. Mama just stared at it - a couple of gentle pecks on the beak - then left it and carried on happily with the other 8. We spent a lot of time watching the chicks and little EE was fine and normal for the first 5 days.

So Yesterday I brought it in the house to see if I could get it to eat or drink - It wouldn't. If I put it's beak into the water it will then hold it's head up so I know it is getting something - if I put its beak into the food would it will eat a tiny bit but will not willingly peck at anything or drink. Tried egg yolk, yogourt, and warm wet chick crumbles and always get small amounts in. When I went to put it back mama attacked it (my mistake probably to take it out in the first place). So now it will stay in the house and hopefully I can figure what is wrong and help it.

Chick will stand and cheep and cheep - only seemes to settle when I hold it. Any ideas anyone? Do you think maybe mama stepped on it and hurt somehow? It will rarely lay down - seems to prefer to stand which makes me wonder if it is hurt. We saw her step flat out on another baby, it was ok, and many times on other ones as well.
We put a stuffed animal and covered it with a cloth and seemed to settle a bit. It is doing dark poos - about 5 yesterday and 4 so far today. Not pasted up at all. we have a heat lamp but off right now as we are having a heat wave here in SW Ontario (over 90 f today).

Thanks in advance for any ideas or insight!

I wish there was an answer on this. I've got a little one acting the same way.

TeamChaos, how's your chick doing now? I've got a one-week old chick who won't lie down, too. Stands in one spot for long period of time and rarely interacts with the other chicks. Doesn't budge if we reach in to pick her up. She scratches at the area under her beak a lot and has been gaping. My best guess right now is brooder pneumonia. From what I'm reading, there's no remedy for it, so we're preparing for the worst. But since brooder pneumonia is a fungal problem, I'm trying garlic in the water to see if that can fight it.

My baby chick won't eat or drink while one is running around exploring and eating and I keep trying to encourage her to eat but she won't I'm just putting small amounts of chick feed in her mouth so she doesn't starve
