baby ducks hatched then died?

My duck hatched 2 baby muscovy ducks and they lasted one day and died in nest? They had long stringy thing hanging like a ebilical cord then it dried up. They would jump and twitch? Does anyone know why?

I`m sorry! I wish I could help, but I don't really have any idea. Do you think the mother accidently stepped on them or something? What was the nest made of?
