I just had a baby hatch last night. A few days before a second hen started sitting with the momma hen. I have a 8 X 12 coop and live in Houston. 8 hens and 2 roosters. Will these mommas take care of the baby? I'm going to get chick feed today. Should I separate them from the flock? Thank you for your help! (The baby is under the 2 hens in the photo)

I would keep them separate for the first few days. Good moms will protect the babies but she isn't going to want to get up until she is sure the eggs are done hatching. I've had babies wander away from mom. I had a Silkie and and a Sizzle who raised a clutch of eggs together, it was the sweetest thing.

Yes, mother hens will usually take good care of their chicks. However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to separate the mother(s) and chicks from the rest of the flock until they're older, since even a fierce mother hen can't always protect her little chicks from aggressive flock mates.

I agree with the above posters. You may want to separate the mother and chick so that the other birds don't harm them.

If I read your post correctly, you said the chick is under two mothers in the photo. It's liable to suffocate under there and the two moms may end up fighting over the chick- let it stay with one mom, or by itself and give it a stuffed toy to cuddle with and a mirror so it sees a friend.

I made a little nursery. The main momma is keeping it under her wing. I'm letting the other hen stay for extra warmth but I will keep a close eye on them. Thank you!!![IMG][/IMG][/IMG]
