    Hey y'all,

I'm a new chicken owner in rural NC. My family and I decided to venture into this crazy world so we could produce our own eggs and bring another element of self-sufficiency into my kids' lives. We love having a huge garden and can/preserve lots of produce, and this is just another step towards less dependence on the WalMarts and Targets of the world.
We have our coop almost complete, so we picked up six white leghorn pullets who are living in a giant rubbermaid in my house. Let the adventure begin!

    Nice to meet everyone!

Welcome to BYC tom California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills!

Oooh, white leghorns! They are fantastic layers! I currently have one in my very mixed flock, called Josie; she was one of four White LH chicks I hatched from Trader Joe's refrigerated, fertile eggs. 3 pullets all named Josie, and a cockerel named TJ. I gave two Josies away to other folks wanting to start flocks of layers.... TJ is gone now, too; he was a gorgeous and brave rooster who died protecting his Josies from something when I was still working last year and not home to chase whatever it was away.

The remianing Josie holds her own amongst 49 other hens & pullets of various sizes and breeds; neither too bossy nor too shy.
