I have 13 hens and 1 rooster. all have missing feathers on their backs near the tail feathers. I live in northern New England. seems to have started this winter and has progressively gotten worse. i haven't observed any pecking in that area. Not sure what it is.... thoughts?[IMG]

[IMG] Looks like maybe that hen is a favorite (of the rooster). [IMG] I've had the same problem with a couple of my hens even though my roo-to-hen ratio is fine. The other chickens might peck it, too, and make it worse. You can get/make a "saddle" for her to wear for a while if it's not getting better. Also keep an eye on it to make sure she doesn't get a nasty scratch on that bare skin from the rooster's claws - without the feathers for protection, that can happen. Good luck!

Yes, our buff orpington got that because a rooster was dating her.

I agree, rooster wear. Time for more hens, or less rooster!
