I read that bananas can kill your chickens is this true? I was going to give my chicks some banana that i have that are spoiling and would like to know if it will harm my chicks.
3 weeks old is a little young for any treats really but a 1 to 2 inch chunk of banana for 12 or so chicks and they should be fine.
A little gos a long way with chicks. Where did you read that bananas can kill chickens? I have never read such a thing.
I have been feeding my girls raisins as treats when i go out to them for bonding time they love them, they also get Kale leaves and whatever bugs get into there coop, I found a torn apart fat tail scorpion in there coop the other day.
Here is the link i was reading it was actually a post from this forum.
I'm posting this as a possible warning about feeding chickens bananas and asking for information as well. Here's why -
I talked to Geebs yesterday about the sudden death, apparent heart attack, her rooster suffered while she and the 4-H kids were watching him and feeding him bananas. She said he was eating the bananas and then just dropped dead.
Her story reminded me of another that I read here on BYC recently (I couldn't find the thread) but I remember the story was the same - the person was feeding their rooster bananas and he suddenly dropped dead. I remember the responses were "maybe he choked" or "maybe he just had a heart attack".
So I was telling my husband about these stories when he said (and he's a chemist), "probably potassium imbalance". He said you can give a person a heart attack just by giving them a shot of potassium so a banana could quite possibly kill a chicken.
In any event, I have no proof of this theory and certainly don't want to try it out myself but I know in the last few weeks I've heard of two identical episodes so there must be something to it so I thought I would post this as a possible warning to others.
I wish I could find the thread that had the story but my searches are coming up empty.
You have to take many posts on this forum with a grain of salt...(which can probably kill your chickens)
I read many interesting things here, but tend to check several very different sources before making up my mind on some of the issues.
There are a LOT of very knowledgeable people here, but I have a feeling there's also quite a few without much experience. I'm still pondering the vanilla air fresheners ability to keep flies out of the coop...
Having said that, our parrots and chickens do eat bananas on occasion with no ill effects.
