Hi, I am a chicken newbie and I have a wonderful 8 week old bantam cochin. I bought him/her at 5 weeks old with an 80% chance of being a pullet. Lately, I have noticed him/her making a noise that sounds like an immature crowing. Since I am a new chicken mom, I am not sure if what I am hearing is actually crowing or just her sound. I wouldn't care except that we are unable to have roosters in Huntington Beach.

Here are a few pictures but I am definitely no chicken photographer! Please let me know what you think.

Thank you so much

Thanks sourland. Is it common for a pullet to make a sort of squawking sound? It's so different from the other pullets. They do a high pitched chatter but this is different. I recorded the sound but can't find a way to attach it

When my Cochin bantams were 4 weeks old you could tell the roosters very easy(BRIGHT red, large comb) 2 or 3 out of 4 of them were noticably crowing by 5 or 6 weeks old, so I'd say pullet!

My little guys aren't crowing, but the bright red combs at a very young age were a giveaway. I thought they could have been more considerate and let me have hope for a few more weeks
