Whats the style that is roughly 4' sq, has 8" plywood sides that sit about 2" off the ground on corner legs. light in the middle. We are about to brood a set of chicks and we are in a new setup, having a proper barn and all...

Im thinking of useing this style. anyone have insights on useing one before?

It looks like the lights are inside the boxes? If they stick down 6" into an 8" box on 2" legs, that puts them only 4" above the litter. The bulbs I have all say 18" is the minimum height. So, what's to keep them from igniting the litter? Or burning a chick that gets bumped into it? A panel heater would make them like a giant Ecoglow but a heat lamp would make them a fire hazard. Am I missing something?

thats not my setup in the pic... just a representation of the type of brooder i was talking about.

Normally the light sits ontop of the box. and shines through a whole in the top. (or sits on wire mesh)

AH! hover brooder! there we go......

now who uses one and what kind of setup do you have..... lights on the sides inside... or lights on the top?
