Barn Kitten

We were in the process of adopting a "working cat" from the SPCA as a barn cat for our 5 acre property. Well, instead my husband showed up from work with a 4 week old kitten he had found abandoned under a building.... Not the plan. So now I have some questions on how best to handle this.


Does anyone have experience acclimating a kitten to being a barn cat? She was already living outside, but I feel like she's entirely too small to just put her out now safely. I have a large dog crate I planned to use for the working cat until she became familiar with her home base.

Also, how can I keep her safe from Racoons and Hawks? The chickens have a secure coop, but we've had some hawks make attempts as they are free range during the daylight hours.

My sister has mamma’s raise their kittens in the barn. Do you have bales of hay in the barn that she can crawl into for protection?
That would’ve been nice to adopt form SPCA, our shelter won’t adopt a kitten or cat unless it will be a house cat.
