These owls were obtained legally from the DEC!
I was able to dissect a Barred Owl on Saturday. My friend is a wildlife biologist and is a bird educator at our Audubon center. The owls came from Oregon, where they are a non native species and are pushing out the native spotted owl, which are endangered. The DEC had to step in and start culling some Barred Owls. Instead of the birds going to waste, the DEC let them go to education. My friend held a class to dissect, and it has given me the confidence to necropsy my own birds if I need to. There are differences in anatomy to a chicken. The owl has no crop. But I did find a pellet!
Here is my owl
Here is a pellet that was in it
The pellet was a whole mole!
The internal organs
Skull
The ear hole
