Barred rock pullet of cockerel?

They are 13 or 14 weeks old. I just picked them up two weeks ago. I was told they were hens but the breeder sexed them useing a needle and thread above their heads and depending which way it swung determined the sex. Does that work? There hasn't been any crowing yet but they are aggressive and have large combs and very thick legs. Do you think these are hens?

pullets that is funny, I can't believe people still believe in that stuff. Maybe was just putting on a show for you, to get you to buy them
 
It looked like a strange method to me too. She had over 1000birds and that's how she sexed them all. Thanks for the replies!
