I bought these two barred rock chicks from a straight run bin in TSC after trying to follow the dark leg and small head spot tricks. Im just trying to see if I can get a definite sex of them yet. They are around 5 weeks in age.

Chick #1 is definitely more curious than chick #2. #1 comes up to me and checks me out, it also holds it's tail feathers up more and has alot more white than #2. As far as comb growth, they seem to be about the same size but #1 seems just a tiny bit pinker but not by much, they both still more yellow.

You can see chick #1 in the background of this picture poking its head over everyone else

Both females.

At 5 weeks, the comb of a male would likely look different with a bit of color as compared to a female.

Interestingly, one of yours (#1) is more "white" than the other. Males will get 2 barred genes, giving them wider white bars. Wider white bars give a male a lighter appearance. Even though she has more white and more obvious bars compared to the other one, I still think she is a female at this point. Of course, maybe #1 is a slower to develop male.

Here is two weeks later (today May 10th). What I notice is the comb and waddles of chick#1 are getting more red than chick#2's pinkish coloration. Also chick#1's tail feathers seem to be growing in longer. Also #1 is definitely alot more white than black but I don't see much of the double bar gene as I would expect.

Chick #1 is the one on top and Chick #2 is the one on bottom facing right.

I know this is an older thread, but wondering if you have pics of your chickens when you first got them as baby chicks, for comparison? I have 3 barred chicks, sexed as pullets that I’m watching right now!
