Hi I recently saw a person mention ex-battery chickens? I was wondering what they are?

I believe they are hens retired from commercial egg farms. Most of these become meat, but sometimes you can find them up for adoption. I think they generally still lay some eggs, but they are past their laying prime so the commercial farm will replace them with younger more productive hens. They have usually lived their lives in less than "Nice" conditions, never seeing grass or blue skies.
