Please help. We have our first batch of poults. Purchased 6 from Big R, lost one the first day. Remaining 5 are doing great but I am unsure of the type. They were sourced from Privett, but not identified.
Ive been reading and searching, but i cannot locate a source that clarifies differences at such a young age. About 10 days old now. I have 2 that are much larger, 2 quite small, and one in the middle. Feather pattern is the same on all. I will attempt pics tmrw. They match the standard bronze pics online tho.
They are not eating pooping machines like cornish cross, and do not have a comprable growth rate either. I dont know if thats helpful information, but we just finished with the Cross, and this us much different.
If anyone has any advice i would truly appreciate it. My biggest problem is I have, against all advice I have seen, fallen completely in love with these little guys, if I have BBB, I need to quickly figure out how to distance myself. Im hoping for heritage, to be self sustainable.
Im sorryfor such a long post, thank you in advance!!!

email big r and ask which they are selling. That is what I did with coastal farm. They just said bronze, so when I realized the same as you, we emailed them and found out they only sell standard bronze.

The price paid might be an indicator.

If the price was 8 to 10 Dollars they were probably broad breasted.

    Heritages are about 15 plus.

If you want heritages try craigslist.
In my area it's just starting to have some poults listed going price is about 8 dollars.

    Welcome to turkeys.

Ive been suffering from chicken math for a while now, I wish I had known turkey math was just as bad lol. I called privett, they said they do not track what order goes to each specific big r, that makes me wonder about their practices in general. Big are declined to even guess " we get what they send us" was my answer.
So, Im pretty sure one that died was perhaps black spanish, based on looking up pics, not the most accurate method i know, but its one reason i hope these are standard.

In some ways turkey math is worse.

The little buggers are too sweet. We got 4 more pullets this year and on a whim my husband had to have a turkey. Well, we are all in love now. We've been doing a bunch of yard stuff, new chicken coop we've been building, gardening and such and he just follows like a little puppy. When he's tired he want's to go into the house since we kept him with the chicks in the house till they were about 6 weeks old. he'll go into the house, straight to our bedroom, jump on the bed and fall asleep. Too cute.

Is it possible to tell at a young age, 2-3 weeks if they are broad breasted or standard? Two are huge, two are small, one right in the middle. All have been eating, drinking, active and appear healthy. Purchased same day and location, all brooded together.

The biggest difference between the two breeds is one will grow out over 28+ weeks to full sized, and the other is a rapid grower, so much so that sometimes their bones and organs can't keep up, which is why they are oftentimes butchered young. Otherwise, the standard bronze and BB Bronze oftentimes are identical in feather patters and coloration, so it may be too soon to tell for you.

Check the legs. BB will have much heavier legs that often look a little shorter than those of heritage poults.
