So will hardware cloth, welded wire fencing, hinges, etc....

The only passive thing that makes a bear reconsider when he or she is determined is a strong pop of electricity.

I saw one up close on my grandpa's farm once. I was setting up on a bluff and it ambled through the scrub brush below me. Its amazing how quiet they are, combined with raw power..you wouldn't know anything was there till it pulled everything apart! My advise as well..a good electric fence...two strands, one at about two feet and another at three feet. That'll pop her on the legs and the nose.

I will definately take the electric fence suggestion into consideration.

You may also train the bear to the electric wire by draping a slice of bacon over the wire. When the bear sniffs the bacon, she will be zapped on the nose, and learn quickly where not to be. A friend did this around his bee hives, after which the bears left the hives alone. Before the wire was used the hives were destroyed.
