Hello, I/we are new to chickens this year. I just realized I have not introduced myself. I am a small animal veterinarian that started with a few chicks earlier this year and have since developed an addiction. I love having eggs of different colors, so my goal is to have quite a variety of different breeds. If you have chickens with awesome egg colors PM me please! I would like to start hatching soon :)

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Since you are wanting different colored eggs, you will want to pick up some chocolate egg layers such as Marans, Welsummers, or Barnevelders, and of course some Easter Eggers, which lay eggs in a number of different colors; blue, olive, green, beige, and even pale pink or gold. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chicks do you have now?

I have black marans, a black copper, a couple blue coppers, black tailed buff and cookas for my dark layers. EEs a couple legbars for the blues. A few OE, hopefully I can hatch some home grown OE next year. For brown layers I have Brahmas, Red sex link, black sex link, speckled Sussex, astralorp and a favorelle.

You have a really good start already on those colorful layers. You've also got some really good layers in the Australorp and the Sex Links. Black and Red Sex Links are especially egg laying machines. If you have the opportunity, you might want to pick up a Welsummer. They are chocolate egg layers like the Marans, but their eggs are typically spotted or speckled, which gives them a really unique appearance. Also, you can breed one of your blue egg layers to a chocolate egg layer of the opposite sex to produce some Olive Eggers.

What types make pink eggs? Every once in a while I catch a glimpse of one, but have not found much on it yet. I actually did just get a couple leghorns and welsummers to add more variety. My computer was locking up so I had to quit listing. I can hardly wait until they are all laying beautiful eggs.

There is a good article on which combinations of shell colors combine to make other shell colors (inclucing pink) at http://www.communitychickens.com/all-about-egg-color/. Hope this helps.
