bedding for coops?

I was reading about the use of "cat litter" for the floors of the coops...my question is this...isn't this cat litter dangerous for the chickens? I mean, I don't even use "cat litter" for my 4 inside kitties...I use shredded paper...So what is the general consensus on this? Just wondering?

I have just switched to sand, and it works great.

Some use pine shavings, some use sand, some use other things. I would think that kitty litter would be quite expensive compared to the cost of pine shavings or sand.
