bedding for winter

i know nothing about chickens,iv been using straw for thier bedding,should i be using something different?and by the way what in the @#$% is a poop tray,i built them a really cool coop but no one told me about a poop tray.

I use pine flakes, 6in deep, clean em out spring and fall ( twice a year). Search deep litter method.

Lot of poop happens while birds are on the roost. Place poop trays positioned to catch the droppings... no high elevation splatter, easy cleanup.. Makes pine flakes that much nicer.

I have used pine shavings in the past and am currently using hay. I like both, but I have found they get the hay everywhere, in the water and food, they just love kicking and scratching it around. haha
