I would imagine you'd have to be diligent about changing the newspaper very often. Especially if your brooder is indoors. That could be time consuming and a pain IMO. I use pine shavings and change those out about every other day. I missed a day this past week and I didn't notice any smell. So, I could probably go longer in between changes. I only have three chicks though. I'm one who favors simplicity so I'd much prefer pine or some other easily changed and inexpensive methods.
Another thing with pine is that when they scratch around in it they're turning it for you much like compost. With newspaper poo would just sit there and marinate til you were able to change it.
