Bent toe...[IMG] What is it? What causes it? Is it an incubation problem or a genetic problem?

I thought my hen just had a broken toe or something but it's always been that way.[IMG]

One of my Marans hens has this 'condition'. Does it mean that none of her eggs should be hatched?

Alright, all you smart chicken folks, inform me![IMG]

    ps... I love all these smilies! They're a riot!![IMG]

It can be either one. I've got two like that and it doesn't seem to affect either one and their ability to get where they want to be.

I have no clue what causes it but one of my babies i hatched from Meyer Hatchery has a bent toe. It gets around just fine. Matter of fact it has made it a fav of my kids. I don't know if it is a hen or roo, but they call it Mr. Peeps with the freakish toe. None of the others have it. So i was just thinking it was an accident in the development. I would think that if it caused a risk to future generations of the chick that Meyer would not be selling the eggs from that peticular line. But who knows. We still love him(or her).

Yeah, it could be genetics but I think the majority of them are caused during incubation and is not inheritable. The very first time I hatched out chicks in a box when I was little, I set 12 eggs, 10 were fertile, 8 hatched, and 5 had crooked toes... I think it was incubation problem there...

    How interesting!

Mine came from Meyer hatchery as well. And this second batch of Cuckoo Marans, one of them has the bent toe thing as well.

I will simply file it away as just a incubation thing.[IMG]

Thanks so much for the input!

Mine that has a bent toe is a Mottled Cochin. I hatched 16 from Meyer and this was the only one with a bent toe.
