Hello! My family has been thinking about getting a goose to join our bird family. We have quite a few chickens and 3 ducks housed in the same area and plan on raising a goose to live with them. Is there a breed you would recommend? We were thinking about getting one to help protect the chickens but that wouldn't attack us! :) thank you!

One goose will be unhappy. They need their own kind. They also won't protect your other poultry and may even attack them. Some get along with other species, but most seem to chase them in my experiences.

Geese are nice, but it's best to keep more than one, and give them their own designated area. I like my American buff. My pilgrims have cornered and killed chickens. So far my African are chatty little goslings.

^^this.

I’ve had pilgrim, Toulouse and now just three 8 week old Cotton Patch geese. CPG are known for being more docile, small and quiet but they’ve become bullies to the ducks even still. They are having their own pen built to keep them separated. Breeding season will increase bad behavior x1000. When I went to pick up eggs from the breeder I heard not a peep so I had to ask her if she had them lol turned out I had driven right past them and did not get any alarms or anything (geese I’ve had would be screaming).

That being said I LOVE keeping geese. They’re highly intelligent and I love watching them. Keeping them is very rewarding and if you’re up for it I’d recommend it.

I’ve heard really good things about Buff geese but have no personal experience.

You should get at least two. They’re not that great at protecting the flock but they could be a little bit of help as long as they don’t hurt the others. I had two Africans and they were pretty nice. They were mean to my ducks at first but calmed down quite a bit. One was cranky and would try to bite some but wasn’t too bad. The other was really sweet and liked hugs. They were definitely noisy though

Thank you for your opinion! We are still doing some research so I'm glad to know we should be getting more than one. I would hate for them to be unhappy
