Best material for chicken run--sand?

Do you put sand in your run? Does it work well? Right now it's just...well..mud, this time of year---very messy and wet (in Seattle). Anyone use sand?

I've used sand before. The girls love to dust bathe in it, however, it doesn't last long. When we had a really wet spell, most of it washed away within three weeks. Currently, I have much in the run and it's my favorite, so I'll probably stick to that.

I use sand and love it, I made a boarder with 2x6's to hold it in and put landscape fabric down to keep it from washing away, any water drains and leaves the sand.
