Any duck will make a good pet. It all depends on how they are raised. From day one you have to handle them. As they get older, continue to handle them and give them treats.

Females are loud and will quack quite a bit. Males are quiet and whispery.

Personally, I say Muscovies. My domestic ducks always turn crazy, no matter how much I handle them when they are younger. I got my muscovy drake as a full fledged Juvie and he follows me around all over! They are quiet, since they dont quack, and are really cool ducks.

The Black Cayuga ducks are a very good choice if you want a quiet duck. I have a pair, and I never hear my duck quacking. Probably because the 2 pekin ducks drown her out!

I have 2 Cayuga's and the female isn't AS loud as my Pekin was but almost! They're a good breed but stick with the males.

I had a male mallard and he was one of the friendlyest ducks I had ever had. He would come up and sit on your lap and just drift off to sleep. I really miss him. He got killed by an owl a few weeks after the county fair. I miss him alot.

We've been researching and even though we don't really love the look of the Muscovies (sorry guys) we have heard they are the best breed for temperament, egg laying, being quiet, and not requiring a large pond. Perfect for us city dwellers.

So, come spring we'll probably try to hatch out some eggs or find some local ducklings (if anybody will have either in the Spring, let us know).
