So.....we are in between our 4 day old Silkies (that we just love) and waiting on a 2nd batch of other eggs to hatch. Mommy took the kids to the local feed and seed store today to buy a few supplies and we came home with 3 new Black Sex Linked girls :) Which is fine b/c I want egg layers -- but they apparently think they can eat all day since they are under a light. And...their crops are so BIG!

Since I can't turn the heat lamp off - can I just take the food away for the night???

From my understanding, they will stop eating when they are full. My 8 girls often have very full crops as well. They fill up their crop, it empties out and they stuff themselves again. I never take their feed away and they eat treats. They are around 2-1/2 weeks old.

I have never taken feed away from my chicks. It is available to them 24 x 7. The only time I have heard that the only time you take away food is if you are raising Cornish cross meat birds. I have never raised these.
