While plucking a rooster I had a thought about the Birds of Paradise threatened by the hunting and trade of their feathers for ornamentation by the native populations. I wondered if anyone had thought to introduce or promote the use of some of the other spectacular feathers that are available from the various breeds of poultry that could be raised for this purpose and also provide food.
I remembered a show I saw that outlined some of the steps they were taking to make the feathers last longer by providing the people with mothballs etc... to help reduce the the pressure on the bird populations being hunted by reducing the need for new feathers. There was nothing about promoting the use of other feathers. It seems like someone would have thought of this and tried it but just wanted to put it out there.
