I ordered (6) day-old hatchlings from Ideal Hatchery...and they've been doing great for these past 3 weeks.

However, a couple of days ago a chick died suddenly...I just saw it no more than 10 minutes earlier and they all were doing great!

Then today (3 days later)...I was watching the chicks play and eat and drink water in their 6ft x 3 ft brooder...and 20 minutes later I come back to see another BA chick dead. ;-(

Could it be possible that they may have choked to death(?) as both were found next to the feeder and these girls really are voracious eaters...They often eat food that has fallen out of the feeder and to the ground and I have wood shavings on the floor....there are splintery wood chips/shavings/saw-dust...no cedar or walnut...nothing toxic...and they've been on this substrate all the while.

The crops on both chicks were normal...But can healthy chicks just up and die suddenly?
Is there a disease or something?

Besides this I can only imagine that they might have choked to death! Shucks!!! ;-(
