how can u tell if a chicks ganna be barred or stay black. whats the differnce in down feathers
It depends on what breeds you're working with, I suspect. If you are making black sex-links (RIR C x BR H) the barred male offspring would have a white dot on the top of the head while the black female chicks were solid black. If you're talking about general down color differences between a black feathered bird (Australorp) and a barred bird (Barred rock), the true black bird would have black down with a white belly whereas the barred rock chicks would me mostly black with yellowy/white dots on their heads and wings. I think barred rock male chicks look more patchy than barred rock female chicks, almost a grey/white mixture. That is what I have seen in the chicks I've hatched.
A barred chick has a white head spot, a black chick has a solid black head.
so a chick that is all black with a white chest and belly will turn out being all black right?
Quote:No, I don't think. It would help to post a pic.
heres the chick
FRIZZLE COCHIN BANTAM
Quote:Most likely will be solid black, if he is from all balck mating.
all black, very few if any chicks that are black come out solid black. They all have a little white/yellow to them, some like sumatras would make you think they would be mottled but they always end up black.
Yes barred or cuckoo chicks will be colored with a white dot on the head and usually white tipped wings and belly.
Your chick will be all black. This is a picture of my Australorps chicks about 2 days after hatching. Note the light belly.
