Black Spanish off spring question

A Black Spanish or any color turkey can have a Phenotype that is different than the Genotype (the actual hidden genes involved).

Black is a dominate gene. It is what we call a base color. All turkeys have either a black, bronze or blackwing bronze base.

So yes a black turkey can have alot of different colors if the genes are there and combined with the same.

Where did you buy your poults? I have some coming this week from Cackle. Only 3, so I'm hoping they all come out black, and I get at least one of each sex.

There you go! If they are throwing pure black year after year then they are pure black. With all the mix and match breeding going on now days there are all kinds of "sports" cropping up. Just take a look at some of the breeds of chickens.

That does not prove anything. Nothing other than they do not have the same recessive genes. A black turkey can carry other genes that are recessive and it will never show when bred to a black turkey that does not also carry that same recessive gene. Until the bird is bred to another turkey that also carries the same recessive gene can you know that it is not pure bred. A recessive gene is hidden when it is heterozygous. Only in the homozygous form will it show.

Anyone can sell a egg and breed a bird. That does not make them a expert. There is a history with these turkeys that gave them other genes. It is not a bad thing. It just is.

Some times you will see some white feathers in your black poults. This will go away after they moult for the first time. If it doesn't then your turkeys could be carring the genes that make up black mottled. You will see even more white feathers after they molt. They are mainly black based with gray and narragansett modifying genes. Some can also carry a single black winged bronze gene. All of those genes are recessive. The Nargie gene is also sexlinked.

WOW, all I asked was a simple "beginner's" question. I'm still learning. Do my black spanish have one white feather, so ??????? I just like turkeys.
