Can someone tell me about the difference between Black Star and Black Beauties?? Or, are they the same breed? Black Beauties don’t seem to have much “press” that I can find and I’d like to learn more about them.

Doing a google search with these terms turned up a good deal more and a good deal less than what I’d hoped for . . .

    Thank you,
    Steve

I've never heard of Black Beauties, but it does sound like one of the "trade names" for a black sexlink, just like Black Star.

Well, it does to me too, Cynthia.

Both Sun Ray Hatchery in Iowa and Central Hatchery in Nebraska sell "Black Beauties." Sun Ray calls them a "special cross."

Yep, it's just their brand of black sexlink.
Found this description for you on a site:

    « "Black Beauty..."
...is the nickname of the Black Sex-Link. Only the hens of this hybrid Rhode Island Red / Barred Rock species are black. They are excellent layers.

Look for the shiny black feathers (some have a reddish tint to them) to spot the Black Beauties.

Oh... kinda like Cinnamon Queen for red sex-links?

Yep, just like that, a "trade name" sort of thing, although there are a few different ways to make some of the sexlinks. Still, the Black Beauty is the one of the most popular types of hybrid layer under a different name.

A nickname of the Black Sex-Link, huh?

Well, I guess it’s better than calling a hen, "Hey, you!"

    Thanks.

My kid's 4-H leader said he called them black beauties to avoid offending anyone.
