Hello everyone, This will be our 1st time raising chickens. On July 31st we picked up our 9 Golden Comets and then I started planning on how to build our chicken coop. I learned about BYC via searches on the Internet whenever I had questions that needed to be answered. We wanted to raise chickens for the fresh eggs, since we are 100% NON-GMO fanatics and plan to only feed our chickens Organic feed. We live on a small plot in a residential area, so I didn't have a whole lot of room to build a chicken coop. This is what I started with:
The boxer you see is BooBoo. She will be 2 years old next month. We also have 2 male cats, Tiny & Bootsy.
Here is my completed coop & run, which I am very proud of my achievement. It turned out quite well so far.
I utilized the area under the small back porch to use as the actual coop. I figure it will be warm in the winter & cool in the summer. We plan to get 3 ducks and at least 3 more chicks in late February or early March whenever the ducks become available from the hatchery..
Here are some photos showing the living quarters. The chicks spent their 1st night in their new home on September 26th. Later, I decided to add temporary chicken wire between the left door and the nests, so I can open the door in the mornings and the chickens will still have to use their ladder to get down to the lower level and visa-versa.
I'll eventually post all of my photos in an album, from start to finish, as time allows.
Have a blessed day.
