I hatched out some baby ducks that come from our mature ducks.
I have noticed one is kind of a runt. Well, he's about 2 days old. Usually by now they are looking up at you, usually squirming into a corner, ect. He seems to keep to himself, likes being picked up... I just noticed his eyes look strange... I have noticed they have been more squinted & one closes up but they look different... I don't know how to describe it... I will try to take a picture in alittle bit when I have time. Just taking a break from cleaning cages...
How do you know if they are blind? What would cause this?

Thank You,
Tori

Baby could be born blind as to what causes it...anyone's guess. Just like trying to guess why a child is born blind.

Make sure little one gets enough food and water.

i had a couple that were squinty and were ok with being held...right after they hatched and they ended up fine...i think its just from hatching and they are just still tired from it....after a week my ducklings were running around like crazy...just give the little guy some time and he should get better

I thought Uno was blind when she hatched. Bad humidity issues during hatching. I swabbed her eyes with saline solution for about a week. She is fine now, but I was worried for a while there.

My neighbor is hatching out some baby ducks right now. One hatched yesterday and its eyes are swollen shut. They are a few days past the 28 day mark. Could it be blind??? Any suggestions???

Not necessarily, but it could have gotten an infection which can happen if bacteria gets into the egg, I'd try using a soft cloth dipped into warm salt water and just holding it over the eyes and rinsing the eyes . also you can get terrimycin eye ointment at most feed stores and use it around and in the eyes, also veterycin spray is very safe to use in and around face and eyes. Hopefully the li ducklings will get over this own it own,

she says she has some veterycin that they were using on her brothers pigs. I hope she actually tries. I will try to check in every day to see how its doing and let you guys know.

Veterycin is excellent stuff I hope they will use it.
