Blood in egg, What is this???

    The gal friend broke a egg right in the pan yesterday and there was a good amount of blood from yoke and went out in the white. I got rid of my roosters this fall and all I have in there now is hens so I did not think they fertile. I have seen a small amount when I had roosters. Here is one more thing I go out every so ofter and there is a rooster pheasant in the run with them. Can that happen?????????Any ideas on what may be wrong, Could there be something the hens picked up this winter. Oh yeah, They are just starting to lay again after moldt. Thank you for any help.

    Blood spots are blood or pieces of tissue that gets released along with the yolk from the hen as it is making the egg.

    This blood came from yoke and covered about one third of the white. So you are saying this is alright.

    Per my chicken book: blood spots can be on yolk or white. It can be caused by blood vessels breaking from the yolk sac is released at a different point other than the "suture line" where the yolk usually breaks off from that is free from blood vessels. Blood spots can also be triggered by too much vitamin A in their diet, or can be hereditary. Young hens can have them but they are more common in older hens. Overall, blood spots are rare.

    I've seen a few in commercial eggs I've bought, but it isn't often. If a hen routinely laid eggs with blood spots, they would cull that hen.

    If you think there was too much blood to be a normal blood spot, there is always the possibility that perhaps that pheasant managed to fertilize one of the hen's eggs. Info from Extension says that pheasants and chickens have been crossed, but the hatchability of the eggs is low.

    With my present batch of chickens I had one egg that always had a lot of blood in it when they first started laying. It was not meat spots, it was blood and pretty much of it. Over their first laying year I gradually quit finding this. Don't know what caused it, but I haven't found any in months. Never had seen it in my previous 18 years of chicken keeping. Guess one just had a problem for awhile and it corrected itself.
