Okay, so — they just turned 5 weeks old, so it is a bit early. I bought a male and female blue ameraucana, but I did a dumb and took the leg bands off that indicated which was which....and one died from an infected navel within the 48 hours of bringing them home ( along with 20+ other chicks. correction: i only lost 2 chicks out of an entire 20+ order lol ).

One also might not be an ameraucana because I got it out of the bin for $2. Their bin chicks were just what was leftover after filling orders ( I did manage to get another jubilee orp. ) and I thought I grabbed another ameraucana, but it could be a Steele Egger.

Anyways, I’m wanting to know if I lost my male or female. Meyer’s said they refunded me ( not sure what price they even refunded me for ) for the loss as store credit, but nothing shows up on my account or in the shopping cart when I go to checkout on the website. I figured if I knew which one I lost for sure, I could just have them ship me another one or I could make another trip there myself.

My vote is for male (#2) because of how the comb looks right now (three rows), but it is too early to tell for sure. I'm not sure for #1 - could go either way, especially if it is a mix. Should pink up quite a bit over the next few weeks if any are cockerels :)

Okay, so it looks like I lost my female. I should only have one male, though, which could be a problem. The bin chicks should’ve all been pullets, so I hope I didn’t end up with more boys than I wanted lol.

They are a bit young but they are looking like boys. You should wait a few weeks to be sure.
Oof, I don’t like the sounds of that, lol. That’s one boy more than I wanted. The bin chicks were supposed to all be pullets, but mistakes happen. I’ll definitely be waiting a few more weeks.

Well it’s almost impossible to tell at this age. I’m just basing that off of what I usually see, I could be wrong.

Do you think I could compare their pea combs to my dark brahma pullets that are the same age? Or would it not work since brahmas mature slower?

Anyways, I thought I’d get your opinion on the matter, because all of my previous chickens have had single combs or been sex-links. Not to mention, I’ve only had chickens for a little over a year so I’m still pretty new and testing the waters on different breeds. You’re probably closer to being right than I ever would be

I have never raised a Brahma so I’m not sure about them. I breed ameraucanas so I’m a little better with them but I’m not perfect. I just find it easiest to wait.
