Absolutely new to ducks and not sure on the gender of the one and only I have. I know it is a Muskovy but that's about it.

    Thanks for the help.

No curly tail feathers, so not a drake. But ya, how old?

It's a Muscovy, drakes don't get the curly tail feathers.[IMG]

I agree ML, with the OP holding the bird it appears not that large, however an age would be helpful. It's head sorta reminds me of my 5mth old duck.

The duck is a little over 5 months old.

It's really hard to tell by a pic when you don't have another Muscovy for comparison, that being said drakes by 5 months usually have thick legs ducks slender, drakes will begin to make low noises girls high pitched trilling, boys sound like they have a cold they say it sounds like hissing but I have geese and they hiss not my scovie drakes. . and most drakes stand taller than ducks. Usually the thick legs and voice is the biggest giveaway though.

If I have a female, at what age do they usually start laying?

I'd say female too. As the other members here have told me about 6 months old they start laying. [IMG]
