Bran Flakes for Runny Poop?

My dad is an old farmer and he told me he fed his hens bran when their poop got a bit softer. Has anyone else tried plain bran flakes?

Haven't tried bran, but fermenting your feed will help with runny poop and the odor that goes along with it..
