Today is day one of The Homrighausen Chicken Experience. We set out early to search Tomball, TX for the perfect chicks for our brood. We were wide open on breeds but did our research at www.backyardchickens.com and knew more about what we DIDN’T want than anything else. After a couple misses we found D&D Feed & Supply in Rosehill. What a great place, and exactly what you would want a feed store to be. More than anything we were impressed at the selection of chicks they had on hand. We scooped up 2 Americaunas (they lay green, blue & pink eggs), a black australorp, a buff orpington, and a barred rock. Think this will give us a nice assortment of breeds, personalities and eggs.
Their first home is a brooder. Our brooder is a large washtub with about an inch of pine pellets on the bottom for them to run around on. We got a gallon waterer (and boy do they drink!) with water & a little Darvet vitamins & minerals mixed in, and a quart feeder with chick starter in it. The only other thing we have is a reflector light with a french-fry bulb in there to keep it around 90 degrees for the ladies. This will be their home for the next few weeks. I am buried deep in tractor research.

Next Project is the Chicken Tractor! Trying to freecycle one without looking like a Sanford & Son operation.
