Hello. I am getting ready to retire and my grandson wants to start raising chickens. We have the land to do free range and would like to start small and start the process of teaching him responsibility for taking care of animals. Any suggestions are welcome.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock! BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost! There is a lot to know about chickens before just buying.... ANY. What purpose do you want out of your chickens? Eggs? Meat? Pets? Dual Purpose? Show or Exhibition? Some breeds serve some as the worst and some as the best. Some serve more than one. I.E. Red Sex Links make great pets and are the best egg layers out of all the chicken breeds because they were significantly bred for their high egg production (300+ per year) Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

Thanks for the quick reply. I agree that I do not want to jump in and not be prepared. Thats why I want to make sure "I have all my chicks in a row" first.

Welcome to BYC. In addition to free ranging have a pen type set up for when predators strike, and sooner or later they will. Electric fencing is a great deterrent.
