We dont know the breed or gender of this little chick (around 14 weeks old) any suggestions? It seems to be friends with the wheaton maran next to it.

"It" is a "he", and he is a French Black Copper or Wheaten Marans. Very pretty!

How do you know its male from that picture, we got told its female.

First of all, the coloring is like that of a male. Female Black Copper Marans have almost entirely black plumage, with only a bit of copper on the neck. Also, he is showing pointed, shiny hackle (neck) and sickle (tail) feathers, which are only found on roosters. Lastly, his comb development is a bit more than what your average hen would have at 14 weeks of age.

He has a large red comb and wattles, and the stance of a rooster. A hen would not look like that at only fourteen weeks old. He also has saddle feathers (the pointy, long feathers near his tail), hackle feathers (the pointy feathers on his neck), and shiny green feathers.Additionally, he has the coloring of a male Black Copper or Wheaten Marans. A female would look like one of these birds:

(This is a Black Copper Marans hen. See the color difference?)

This is a Wheaten Marans hen.

Hope I've helped!

What makes you think that he could be a Wheaten Marans? Looks like a Black Copper Marans to me.

I think both those birds are roosters. the front one is a black copper marans, the second idk what it is, but it's not a wheaten marans.

What made me think that he could be a Wheaten Marans is that he hasn't gotten all of his coloring in yet. At this age, he looks kind of like a Wheaten Maran. When he gets older, it will be easier to tell what he is. I'm leaning towards him being a Black Copper Marans, but I was just throwing the idea that he was a Wheaten Marans out here.
