We had a tragic accident with a dog this week and lost half of our chickens, so I rushed to the local farm store and picked up a dozen more. I got some Easter Eggers and a couple of Lavender Orpingtons. I also got two other breeds, but unfortunately none of the tanks were labeled, so we had to guess based on what I’ve seen there recently and what the fellow at the store thought. I thought I grabbed a couple of Welsummers and the guy from the store thinks the other two are Rhode Island Reds. Now that I have them home, I’m not confident in either of our guesses. I’m not very familiar with RIR, so I have no clue there, but I’m aware that several breeds have the same chipmunk markings as a Welsummer. Those birds have pinkish legs compared to the others, so I’m wondering if they’re Speckled Sussex. The worker at the store thought they were more Easter Eggers, but they don’t have the puffs on their faces and the other EEs I’ve gotten there always have green legs. Thoughts?

Does this wing help make an ID. I really was leaning Speckled Sussex, but now I’m back to Welsummer.

It is very hard to tell Speckled Sussex from Welsummer at this stage.

If SOP, the Sussex should have beige legs while the Welsummer yellow. However, that doesn't hold true with feed store hatchery lines.

I'm thinking I'm seeing Welsummer (chipmunks) and Production Reds (slight line on head).

Time will tell.
