It's me again... So, yesterday, I asked about Demelza (chickie #1). We thought she was a dark brahma (she was a dark chick - shades of grey and browns!), but has lightened up dramatically and I'm told she's a Buff Brahma. Her coloring is so different from Caroline (chickie #2), who I thought was a Buff Brahma. Is Caroline a different variety of Brahma? (When we got them, Caroline/#2 was much lighter/yellow.)

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with me. :)

Looks like brahmas with black leakage. Or a possibility is she has a dark brahma with the penciling in her background somewhere.
I don't know.... I'm baffled. The first one was very dark as a new chick - now is much lighter. Both are really good girls. I can't really find a pic that looks like the first one anywhere... She has some grey feathers underneath. The second looks more typical of what I see in Buff Brahma pics. Do you suppose that the first just has some penciling in her genes somewhere down the line, then?? This is our first flock, so I really am clueless - but I adore these babies!!

They are both Buff Brahmas. Demelza just has some extra black feathering. I believe that's called 'mossiness'? It's a disqualification for showing, but for a layer or a pet hen, it doesn't cause any problems or anything. Just think of it as an easy way to tell the two of them apart! 😊
Fantastic!! Thank you. (I"m still figuring out how to "forum". lol) I don't think Demelza aspires to be a show bird... as long as I keep my promise to not eat her. I do like being able to tell them apart!

It could be, or sometimes chicks change appearance from down to feathers?
