hi there. my grandmother sent me a photo yesterday of my great grandfather in germany with his flock of chickens. its a black & white photo but they look bright white, like a leghorn. they have large combs. i'm pretty sure she said they laid brown eggs.

anyone have any ideas what kind of chickens that would be?

i'm just curious. its funny, everyone in my family thinks i'm a nut for having chickens, obviously i got my love of critters from my Opa.

Did they have New Hampshire Reds back then? My Dad raised Brown Leghorn Rooster over RIR hens. We hatched all the time (well the hens did) and had crosses that layed brown eggs.

Could they have been white rocks? They lay brown eggs... not the best but they are dual purpose... back then at least.

Sorry, re-read your post. you said white. I would go with silkie chicken on the white Rock. Rocks have large combs.
