What breed are theses hens.?
The red hen in back looks like some sort of "Production Red". In front, the black bird may be a Black Australorp.
The guy i bought the chickens from says the red one is a "RIR"
Nope, not a Rhode Island Red. True Rhode Island Reds are a deep mahogany red color. This bird is a "Production Red", which is usually a combination of different red breeds, such as Rhode Island Reds. They are also sometimes sold by hatcheries as Rhode Island Reds. In truth, they are not Rhode Island Reds though. The floppy comb of this bird makes me think it could have some leghorn in her as well.
I agree with Wyandottes7. The back one is a Production Red hen and the front one is a Black Australorp hen. They are both good layers of large, brown eggs, and the Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed; extremely hardy, calm, and gentle. I have raised Black Australorps for years, and my children, and now my granddaughter, have made lap pets of them. )
Production Red and Black Australorp.
