Hello everybody, yesterday I found out that I have a silkie rooster. I have 4 silkies that are around twelve weeks old and 9 layers. I have a barred rock, barred rock bantam, buff Orpington, two RIR, americauna, Red Cross, polish, and houdan. My family and I really want chicks but don't want to have an incubator and when a hen goes broody have her raise them. I was wondering if it was possible if a silkie rooster would successfully mate with one of the large breeds.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Very likely he will try. You may get fertile eggs.

Ok. Thank you. Also if you separate one of the large hens and the roo is there a higher chance than if you kept him with the whole flock.

Hello and welcome to BYC [IMG] It is possible, but why do you want to breed with him and the larger breeds?

Well we love our silkies and our barred rocks so I was just wondering if we could. We like different looking chickens.

My little sultan mounts my large silver laced wyandottes and mates with them. I haven't hatched out any of those eggs to see what they would look like. I am sure your silkie would be able to mate with everyone as long as she lets him. Good luck [IMG]
