I know when you brood chicks you shoud use paper towels over the pine shavings for a few days so the chicks want fill up on savings but what is the best type of litter to use when you let a broody hen raise the chicks. Will the paper towel set up still work with a hen in a small brood pen?
I have never had a problem with pine shavings. If you think you might, you can use straw. That is all we ever used back in the good old days. I still use straw with some hens, they don't like the shavings and will lay every place but in the nest box. And some hens will not go broody with shavings in the nest box.
Thank you...I like the incubator but still enjoy seeing a mother hen and her chicks doing thier thing. I will use hay for the nest box and savings in the pen area.I appreciate your advice.
