Is there any issue in covering a brooder floor in newspaper? Can the ink harm the lil guys?

I had cedar but they were eating it...the puppy pads catch their little claws....

Don't use cedar shavings, especially not with chicks, the aromatic oils in them can be harmful. I would recommend pine shavings, covered with household tissue for the first few days until they learn to tell the difference between their feed and the shavings.

Thanks. I picked up a bail of pine shavings yesterday and covered them with paper towels. I really like the paper towels...I just layer them up as they poop then clean it out at days end. Great because these little feather footed pooping beasts are keeping me busy! LOL

Ya newspaper often doesn't make a good brooder bottom. It is too slippery for little chick feet. Paper towels work great though! I used them and let me just warn you, you go through a lot of them! Lol!
    Good luck!

The day brooder is puppy pad, newspaper then topped with paper towel. WHen they poop...I put down more paper towel...(Feather footed)

The night brooder is a fish tank with puppy pad, pine shavings and then paper towels.

Each gets cleaned daily. They are serious poop machines right now.

I have them in my room at night to keep them away from my other animals.
